My name is Curtis Konek. i'm now part of the ninis
History project in Arviat with, Tester and Dutheil. and youth from Arviat.

In the past few months i have been really interested about this Ninisiniaq project. this project will touch a lot of youth in the future, the youth will know more about their history, and about how Inuit lived before the new environment began in 1957, (nickel mine.) before the mine opens Inuit survived by hunting, trapping, fishing and hunting small animals to survive in the Arctic. I know that Inuit had knowledge, wisdom, and respect for other human races. I believe that Inuit will be more affected by the new environment these days. Most of the Inuit have jobs nowadays. That means most Inuit barely go out hunting now, unless they are on summer break, and spring break. And sometimes on weekends too.  I my self like to go out hunting a lot, and I find hunting important as our history is more important too. I believe that my friends and my siblings think the same way as I do, we want to keep our history and language alive. We don’t want to forget about how Inuit lived in a nomadic life in the 1930’s - 40’s. Inuit lived in a igloo’s and tent’s before they were touched by the economic systems. Inuit changed in a matter of months and weeks to live a economic life during the 1950’s to 1960’s. Inuit started to live in shack housing, from living in a tents and igloos.  Inuit started to buy stuff like atv’s, snowmobile’s and use them for hunting and for driving around in town. I believe that most of the elders who were born in the land have something to say about how our history was like in the past, and how Inuit changed so quickly, most of the elders I see in town are getting older and older, as I’m getting older, I believe that we have to talk to our elders and ask them questions about how they used to live in the land with tents and igloos.  I’m interested in this project because it shows that other people care about Inuit history. And we can tell how how Inuit live and how they were touched by the environment in the late 1950’s and 1960’s.
